Though we find ourselves in a season of lights, loved ones, and holiday cheer, sometimes it can be hard to stay positive, you know? Between personal circumstances, global emergencies, and the million other factors affecting in our daily lives, there’s a lot that can leave us anything but merry and bright. So to resettle ourselves in a spirit of gratitude, we wanted to share some good tiding, small and large, to enjoy together. Below we share the ways people are making a better world for our kids and one another -- cheers!
- U.S. high school graduation rates have never been better.
Yep, you read that right! For the fourth straight year, the U.S. high school graduation rate has improved — reaching an all-time high of 82 percent in the 2013-2014 school year. Here’s to all the educators and administrators and parents and kids who are making it happen! Go on, pat yourself on the back, all you rockstars! (Photo from Huffington Post)
- And school isn’t all bullying -- kids are creating beauty, too.
In this powerful video, we see and experience the ways kids are daring to care for each other. In the name of art and a social experiment, one high school producer told kids and teachers they were beautiful, and awaited their reactions. Go on, watch it twice.
- Paying it forward is going further than ever.
Over the years, spontaneous pay-it-forward movements have made headlines a time or two. But now more than ever -- and in more countries than ever -- patrons are sending their kindness to the next customer. An official “Suspended Coffee Day” was named in Italy over five years ago, and with the help of an Irish plumber that designation is reaching all the world over. Grab a cup & read more here. - Finally, a panda that gets us.
Bei Bei the baby panda made his media debut at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington D.C. earlier this month -- did you see the event? Or did you sleep through it? If so, you’re not the only one! Bei Bei himself snoozed through the whole thing, and we’ve never felt a more kindred connection to a baby bear. We salute you, Bei Bei.
- Pandas aren’t the only furry friends getting some love.
In fact, all pets are! More and more states are making animal cruelty a felony. Animal lovers nationwide (which is everyone who experiences this) are making their voices heard, and we’re howling and meowing right alongside them. (Photo from deMilked)
- Kids are awesome.
Okay -- we all knew that. But this video drives home the point. Kids from low income families were asked to choose between a gift they really want for Christmas and a gift for their parents. The result? Us weeping over our laptops.
At Jonas Paul Eyewear, we believe that things both great and small can have an impact we never imagined. From a pair of glasses to a better education system, meaningful gifts come in all different sizes -- and a bright future is headed our way.
It’s with these good tidings that we wish you a very happy holiday season.
